Planning a senior move in the Treasure Valley

Where to start when a parent or loved one is getting ready to move.

A move later in life is about more than boxes. It’s leaving a home full of memories. A little planning makes the days ahead calmer for everyone.

Looking through old photos together is a gentle way to decide what matters most.

Start earlier than you think

Give yourself time. Sorting and deciding take longer than packing. Starting six to eight weeks out leaves room for good conversations instead of rushed choices.

Walk through the home together

Go room by room with your loved one. Talk about what matters most and what will fit in the new home. Ask the community for a floor plan so you can measure before you decide.

Let them lead when you can. It’s their home and their story.

Keep the important things close

Pack a going with me bag: medications, glasses, hearing aids, chargers, important papers, and one or two favorite comforts. It rides with your loved one, not on the truck.

Plan the first night first

Decide ahead which bedding, photos, lamp, and chair go in the new room. Set those up before your loved one arrives, so the first night feels like home.

Ask for help

You don’t have to do it all yourself. Family, friends, and local volunteers can share the load, and Summit Pathways offers help on cost for seniors who qualify.
